Prior to joining the CJUF, Mr. Walden served as deputy mayor of economic development for Mayor Richard Riordan of the City of Los Angeles. He managed all of the activities of L.A.’s Business Team (Economic Development Unit) and directed the city’s efforts to revitalize its South Los Angeles Communities, Downtown and Hollywood’s Entertainment, and Sports Districts, including the development of The Staples Center, L.A. Live, Hollywood’s Kodak Center and The Disney Concert Hall, and The Grove. He led the creation and implementation of L.A.’s Residential Adaptive Re-Use Program and was the senior official responsible for directing the city’s efforts in the revitalization of underutilized and blighted sites in disadvantaged communities, promoting the development of key growth industries throughout the metropolitan area.
Additionally, as deputy mayor, Mr. Walden coordinated the efforts of various city, state, and federal economic development agencies and led the mayor’s efforts to create legislation and institute policies and procedures that streamlined the city’s entitlement and permit process in urban redevelopment zones. Prior to joining the Mayor’s Office, he served as a manager/senior building official in the Los Angeles Building and Safety for over 16 years. He supervised building officials in the inspection and approval of major building structures under construction. He possesses an in-depth knowledge of the city’s zoning, building, and contracting processes. He has served as a member of the Urban Land Institute and the International Council of Shopping Centers, board commissioner for the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority, board member for CREW Los Angeles and co-chair of the L.A.'s Downtown Nighttime Broadway Task Force. He was recognized for his contributions to the USC Gordon S. Marshall School of Business Program in Real Estate, Minority Program in Real Estate Finance and Development.
